Part Three
We didn’t wait long. Less than three months later, Tom and I married in a small church with only family and close friends present, about fifty guests in all. After the simple ceremony, we hosted a reception at a French restaurant. The chef there was one of my top competitors, but I couldn’t deny his exquisite food. We sat at long tables, drinking wine, and being served a four course meal. Tom and I sat together at the head of the table, and Mom was across from us. By the fish course, Mom was already acting a bit tipsy. She pointed at Tom, swaying back and forth.
“You,” she said, narrowing her eyes.
“Me?” Tom said with a good natured smile.
“That’s right, you,” Mom said. “Don’t think you have all the time in the world to give me grandchildren. You best get started on that right away.”
“Mother,” I scolded.
Tom reached across the table and took Mom’s hand. “I don’t intend to wait to make you a grandmother. You have my word.”
Mom’s face brightened with a huge smile. “I knew I liked you,” she said.
After dessert, I went to give my compliments to the chef. I was raving about the seared sweetbreads, when out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tom rushing outside with his cell phone pressed against his ear. I stared after him, then gave Chef Phillip a hug and my deepest gratitude.
I tried to follow to Tom, to see what was so important that he needed to leave our reception, but there were so many guests wanting to wish me well and give me advice, that I never could make it to the door. Twenty minutes later, Tom returned. His forehead was shining with a sheen of perspiration, and his breath was slightly labored. Instead of questioning him about where he was, I decided instead to enjoy the happiness of this moment. I took his hand, then kissed his cheek.
“My husband,” I said.
Tom slipped his arm around my waist. “My wife.” He kissed my temple, then placed his mouth at my ear. “Let’s go home.”
A warm shudder went up my spine. I looked him in the eyes and nodded eagerly.

Tom insisted on carrying me into the building of his corporate apartment, up the elevator, and into the front door. He set me down with a large exhale, then wiped his forehead. We stood looking at each other, giddy smiles on our faces. Tom focused his gaze on me, then walked forward and stroked my cheek.
“Our union has been blessed,” Tom said. “And now we can finally enjoy each other as husband and wife.”
Every cell in my body tingled with need for him. He stroked down my face, neck, and shoulders, making me shudder delightfully. Tom encircled one arm around my waist, and clasped the other hand around the back of my neck. Wrapped in his strong embrace, I knew then that I was his and only his. I was prepared to submit myself fully to him, mind and body.
